The Imperative Of Inclusion: Empowering Nigerian Women
Introduction:
The need for inclusion has become an urgent call to action globally. In the Nigerian context, among the population, Nigerian women face significant challenges that hinder their empowerment, perpetuating a cycle of inequality and missed opportunities.
Over the years progress has been recorded but there's still so much to be done.
.
Let's x-ray inclusion in Nigeria and how it directly impacts the lives of women across the nation.
Consider the journey of Emem, a determined young woman from a rural community, and Fatima, a skilled artisan.
Emem grew up seeing how traditional gender roles and limited access to education held women back in her community and there was nothing she could do, she watched the males enrolled in schools and have access to education and other social and economic infrastructures, but none was available to her, asides the option getting married off to a young man.
Meanwhile, Fatima's, on the other hand, had an exquisite weaving skills, she learnt the skill by waiting for her father, as a determined girl, Fatima practised weaving without her father's knowledge, she mastered her craft, she informed her family she wanted to start a business, they rebuked her for being ambitious to focus on becoming a wife and mother, Fatima didn't take the No for an answer, she applied to banks for loans and her offer declined because she had no property, Fatima became discouraged and took some steps back, remained hidden due to these factors. These stories exemplify the challenges that women encounter, reflecting the broader reality faced by countless Nigerian women based on inclusion.
Why Inclusion?
1. The Power of Inclusive Education:
Access to quality education is a fundamental pillar of empowerment. Sadly, many Nigerian women face barriers such as early marriage, cultural biases, and limited school facilities that restrict their educational opportunities. By prioritizing inclusive educational policies, providing scholarships, and dismantling discriminatory practices, we can empower girls like Emem and Fatima and enable them to access education to realize their full potential.
2. Economic Empowerment through Inclusion:
Economic inclusion is another critical aspect of empowering women in Nigeria. Women encounter barriers in the workforce, including discriminatory hiring practices, unequal pay, and limited opportunities for career growth. The story of Fatima, the talented artisan, emphasizes the importance of breaking down these barriers. By promoting entrepreneurship, providing access to capital, and fostering inclusive business environments, we can unlock the economic potential of Nigerian women.
3. Leadership and Decision-making Spaces:
Inclusive societies recognize the need for women's voices and perspectives in leadership and decision-making. Nigerian women possess invaluable insights and contributions that can shape policies and drive progress. Creating inclusive spaces where women can participate actively in governance, policymaking, and community development will lead to more balanced and effective decision-making processes.
4. Challenging Gender Norms and Cultural Biases:
Addressing deeply rooted gender norms and cultural biases is essential to achieving true inclusion. Imagine Emem and Fatima not having to face these challenges and the outcomes of their lives.
Inclusion requires dismantling societal expectations that limit women's aspirations and reinforce gender-based discrimination. By promoting awareness, education, and positive role models, we can challenge these biases and cultivate an environment where women are encouraged to pursue their dreams freely
Summary:
Inclusion is not a luxury but a necessity for the advancement of Nigerian women. By embracing inclusive policies, fostering economic empowerment, and challenging gender biases, we can create a society where every woman's potential is realized, celebrated, and valued. Let us stand together, breaking down barriers, and forging a path towards a more inclusive Nigeria, where women thrive and drive the nation's progress.
