
Children are vulnerable in many parts of the developing world, subjected to a combination of systemic discrimination based on age and social standing, education, and health. The girl-child suffers from double disadvantages which is as a result of gender discrimination melted out by society.
In Africa especially, Girls are vulnerable because of poverty, traditions, and a lack of resources, infrastructure and implementation of policies.
The girl-child is a female that's below 18 years aged. In Beijing countries, the planet Conference on Women held in 1995 endorsed via the Beijing Declaration that sustaining the rights of the girl-child was of the essence.
The Resolution 66/170 was implemented by the United Nations General Assembly on the 19th of December in 2011 to proclaim the 11th of October because the International Day of the Girl Child.
Written in its Blueprint are the rights and responsibilities of girls, particularly the women within the adolescent age. In countless conferences and fora, the subject of the girl-child has become so crucial.
Different perceptions teem in reference to what the life-style of the girl-child should be, the weight of societal pressures and expectation of her has left her vulnerable to the harsh realities of the society.
In Nigeria example, the rights of the girl-child are enshrined in Section 11 of the Childs Right Act of 2003.(parapharased) It acknowledges that
“every child is entitled to respect for the dignity of his person, and accordingly, no child shall be subjected to physical, mental or emotional injury, abuse, neglect or maltreatment, including sexual assault.
Even with the existence of this Act, the girl-child has remained an vulnerable to abuse, neglect and assault if different magnitude and in most cases has suffered victim shaming and blaming because culture has an expectation of her.
There are still several antisocial occurrences which attest that the rights of the girl child are being wrecked by supposed custodians worldwide.
These rights of the girl-child are often times truncated by the prevailing gender inequality which in turn increases her vulnerability.
Some of the afflictions the girl child undergoes in contemporary society include illiteracy, child labour, parental neglect, harassment, battering and molestation.
The girl-child also suffers sexual assault like rape, under age marriage and prostitution. that's why there are numerous under age girls within the present-day who are growing up with emotional trauma. Expectedly, these occurrences have caused a worrisome increase within the rate of unwanted pregnancies, children outlaws, fatherless babies, children mortalities, abortions, ritual victims, children beggars, and other abnormalities plaguing Nigeria.
One way to reduce the vulnerability of the girl-child in today's society is to ensure that -
